Moringa is a popular plant that is often used in alternative medicine. Some people believe that it can help treat or prevent a range of illnesses and conditions. Here, we discuss the evidence for some of these purported benefits.
Moringa is a fast-growing tree that is native to India. It is also grown in other tropical and subtropical areas, such as Africa, South America, and Malaysia (1).
The leaves, pods, flowers, bark, roots, and seeds of the moringa tree can all be used to make supplements or extracts. These products are available in capsules, powders, and oils.
Moringa leaves are a good source of vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium, and protein (1).
Moringa supplements are sometimes promoted as a natural treatment for the following health conditions:
1. Diabetes
Moringa may help lower blood sugar levels. In a small study in 30 people with type 2 diabetes, those who took 7 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had lower fasting blood sugar levels than those who didn’t take the supplement (2).
Another study found that people with type 2 diabetes who took 6 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had lower fasting blood sugar levels and HbA1c levels, which is a measure of long-term blood sugar control, than those who didn’t take the supplement (3).
Moringa may also help improve insulin sensitivity. In a small study in 20 people with type 2 diabetes, those who took 3 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had improved insulin sensitivity, compared to those who didn’t take the supplement (4).
2. High blood pressure
Moringa may help lower blood pressure. In a small study in 24 people with high blood pressure, those who took 6 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had lower blood pressure than those who didn’t take the supplement (5).

Moringa may help reduce inflammation and relieve arthritis symptoms. In a small study in 30 people with osteoarthritis, those who took 7 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had less joint pain and swelling than those who didn’t take the supplement (7).
5. Cancer
Moringa may have anti-cancer effects. Test-tube and animal studies have shown that moringa extracts can kill cancer cells and prevent them from spreading.

7. Inflammatory bowel disease
Moringa may help treat symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In a small study in 30 people with IBD, those who took 7 grams of moringa leaf powder per day for 3 months had fewer IBD symptoms than those who didn’t take the supplement (14).
8. Acne
Moringa may help treat acne. In a small study in 30 people with acne, those who took a moringa leaf extract for 8 weeks had less acne than those who didn’t take the supplement (15).
9. Kidney stones
